PrairieComm Licenses ARM Microprocessor Core for UMTS Wireless Applications

CAMBRIDGE, England and ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., Sept. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- ARM [(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq: ARMHY)], the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions, and PrairieComm Inc., a developer of baseband ICs and software solutions for wireless devices, today announced that PrairieComm has licensed the ARM946E-S(TM) microprocessor core for development of advanced chipset offerings within existing cellular standards and for next-generation (3G) cellular products supporting UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services) wireless telephony.

PrairieComm will utilize the ARM® microprocessor core as the foundation for its baseband ICs targeting the European and Asian markets for 3G UMTS mobile communications. PrairieComm is currently employing ARM technology in their PCI5110 baseband processor, which enables WCDMA, GSM and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) specifications for high-bandwidth cellular communications. Engineering samples of the PCI5110 are currently available.

Mobile handsets based on the PrairieComm PCI5110 are able to support high-speed, data-intensive multimedia applications, as well as WAP® (Wireless Applications Protocol) and the Bluetooth(TM) specification for short-range wireless connectivity.

``The ARM946E-S core allows PrairieComm to develop leading-edge baseband solutions using the wireless industry's premier microprocessor architecture,'' said John Diehl, CEO, PrairieComm. ``PrairieComm will leverage ARM's low-power, high-performance technology to meet the needs of handset OEMs serving 3G markets worldwide.''

The ARM9E(TM) family of synthesizable processor cores are DSP-enhanced, making them well-suited for applications such as wireless communications that require a mix of DSP and microcontroller performance. For single-chip solutions, the ARM9(TM) family of cores offers considerable savings in chip area and complexity, power consumption and time-to-market. Availability of third-party support from providers of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), application software and software development tools further differentiates ARM as an IP Sourcing Partner for leading-edge SoC developers in the wireless space, like PrairieComm, to achieve a time-to-market advantage.

``This agreement with PrairieComm will help drive the development of a next generation of advanced baseband solutions for the global wireless communications market,'' said Warren East, COO, ARM. ``PrairieComm's implementation of the ARM946E-S solution takes full advantage of the core's low-power, high-performance characteristics. These are critical in wireless applications that demand increased data throughput and extended battery life.''
